Open PDFs in Chrome or Download Them: Where to Change the Setting

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026

On a computer, Chrome has a PDF documents setting with two choices: Download PDFs and Open PDFs in Chrome. Choose the behavior you want there, then check a PDF link. This is a preference-setting guide, not a guarantee about every website’s download button.

Find the desktop setting

Google documents this route: More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings → Additional content settings → PDF documents. Select Download PDFs or Open PDFs in Chrome.

Use browser viewing when you want to read the document in Chrome. Choose downloading when your workflow starts with a saved file. Those are workflow choices; neither option proves that a downloaded document is safe or that it will print correctly.

Make a clear comparison

  1. Pick one ordinary, non-sensitive PDF link you are comfortable opening.
  2. Write down the current preference and what happens when you follow that link.
  3. Change the preference, then revisit the same link.
  4. Record whether a viewer opens, a download appears, or the site presents another page.

This is an editorial check you can perform, not a browser experiment we ran. Keep the link and browser profile the same. Comparing two unrelated websites at once makes it harder to tell whether the preference caused the difference.

If the result still differs from your choice

First return to PDF documents and confirm the option that is selected. Then record the exact action: for example, following a document link versus pressing a website’s button labeled Download. This guide does not establish why a particular website behaves differently.

For support, include your Chrome version, operating system, selected option and a public example link if one is available. Avoid sharing private document URLs or session links. If you cannot find or change the control on a workplace computer, ask its support team about that browser setup.

Keep viewing and printing separate

Opening a PDF successfully answers a viewing question. If a later print attempt fails, start with the PDF printing comparison. If Chrome instead asks to resend form data, that is a different situation covered by the form resubmission guide.

Scope: Google’s documented computer setting. Mobile interfaces and website-specific forced downloads are outside this procedure. We have not tested every browser version or website.
