PDF Not Printing? Narrow Down the File or Printer Problem
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
Start by separating two questions: can this printer print anything, and can this particular PDF print? Make one small comparison at a time so you know which change mattered.
Compare two documents
Choose one non-sensitive page from the failing PDF. Then choose a short document that you have printed successfully before. Use the same computer, printer and application where possible, and record the result for each. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of the exact cause.
| Result | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Neither document prints | Start with the printer connection and its error display. |
| Only this PDF fails | Keep the working setup unchanged and investigate the file or application. |
| A blank page comes out | Record that separately from a job that never reaches the printer. |
Check the connection
Adobe recommends checking the cable connection. If a USB hub is involved, connect the printer directly to the computer. Its guidance also suggests turning the printer off, waiting 30 seconds, and trying again after turning it on. For driver updates, identify the exact printer model and use the manufacturer’s driver instructions.
Keep a useful record
Write down the PDF filename, page number, application, selected printer, visible error and whether paper emerged. Avoid changing several settings between attempts: a successful result is much harder to interpret when you cannot tell which change helped.
For example, “page 2 fails in the same application while yesterday’s one-page document prints” gives support a narrower starting point than “printing is broken.” This is an illustrative example, not a reported device test.
When to stop
If the printer belongs to your workplace, share the comparison results with its administrator before removing drivers or clearing a shared queue. Keep confidential PDFs off unfamiliar repair or conversion websites.
Method: source-based guidance with an editorial diagnostic example. We have not reproduced this failure on a physical printer; this checklist does not promise a fix.
