Search a Scanned PDF in Chrome: Check Text Extraction First
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
Chrome documents automatic text extraction for scanned PDFs in its PDF viewer. Give extraction time to finish, then compare a short, visible word with the text you can select or search. A failed search alone does not prove that the document is empty or that its information is absent.
Know what Chrome’s OCR does
Google says its viewer uses optical character recognition (OCR) to make scanned physical documents searchable and selectable. It describes that conversion as happening on your device, without sending the document data to Google or other parties for the conversion.
Google also notes that extraction can take time for a scanned PDF with several pages and describes an “Extracting text from PDF…” notification. That is documented behavior, not a progress message we observed on your file. This article covers desktop Chrome’s viewer; a document embedded in a website can have a different interface.
Choose a word you can verify
- Open the PDF in Chrome and go to a page containing a clearly legible word.
- If extraction is underway, let it finish before evaluating the result.
- Try selecting a short passage or searching for the visible word using the viewer’s available search control.
- Compare the recognized result with the original page image, including spelling, numbers and punctuation that matter to your task.
This is an editorial acceptance workflow, not a browser test we ran. For example, a reference printed as “Invoice 108” might be confused with a similar-looking sequence. Check it against the image before pasting it into a message or using it to identify a record. Finding some text is not proof that every word on every page was recognized correctly.
If the word is still not found
Record the page number, the exact visible word, whether any nearby text is selectable, and the Chrome version. Note whether the file opened in Chrome’s viewer or inside a website’s own document panel. Preserve the original while asking its sender or support team for a searchable or more legible copy.
This guide does not diagnose every search failure, promise recovery from a poor scan or explain a workaround for copying restrictions. It also does not establish that text recognized in the viewer will remain available in every exported or saved copy.
If the PDF downloads instead of opening in Chrome, see the PDF viewing preference. If your next task is saving form entries, use the separate saved edited-copy check.
Scope: Google’s current desktop OCR documentation and an editorial accuracy check. No scan, text-extraction accuracy or Find keyboard shortcut was tested for this guide.
