PDF Prints Blank? Separate a Blank Preview From a Blank Sheet

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026

Before changing settings, identify where the page becomes blank: in the opened PDF, in print preview, or only on paper. Those are different observations. This checklist helps you describe the failure and choose a smaller next test.

Check the same page at three points

  1. Document view: open the PDF and go to the exact page you intend to print. Note whether its text and images are visible.
  2. Print preview: select that page, check the selected printer and inspect the preview if your application provides one.
  3. Paper: print one copy of that page, then note whether it is entirely blank or only missing certain elements.

Keep the page number fixed. A comparison between page 1 on screen and page 2 on paper cannot tell you where the content disappeared.

ObservationNext useful action
The opened document is already blankAsk the sender to confirm the intended page and compare with their copy.
Content is visible, but preview is blankRecord the application and selected page before investigating its print settings.
Preview has content, but paper is blankCompare one known document using the same printer and application.

Consider a documented rendering workaround

If you are printing from Acrobat or Reader on Windows, Canon documents an Advanced → Print As Image option for PDF data that does not print. Its example uses Reader DC. This is a possible next test, not evidence that every blank sheet has the same cause. See our step-by-step Print as Image guide.

Write a report that support can use

An example report is: “Page 3 has text in the document view and preview, but the physical sheet is blank. A different one-page document prints from the same application.” Add the printer model, operating system and application version. This example is illustrative, not a measured result.

If both documents fail, return to the file-versus-printer comparison. Avoid repeatedly printing a full document while the single-page result is still unclear.

Method: an editorial observation checklist plus a manufacturer-documented option. No physical printer test was performed for this guide.
