Start Google Docs Page Numbers After the Cover and Contents

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026

To start Google Docs page numbering after a cover and contents pages, separate the body into its own section, then apply page numbers to that section with the intended starting value. The current computer menu is Insert → Page elements → Page number → More options. A normal page break moves content to another page; it does not create the section boundary required for independent section settings.

Write the expected sequence first

Physical page position and the number printed on the page are different. For example, a document may have a cover on physical page 1, contents on page 2, an introduction on page 3, and the main body beginning on physical page 4 with the printed number 1.

Before changing anything, note where numbering should begin, the first printed value, and whether earlier pages should be unnumbered or use a different arrangement. This prevents “start on page 4” from being interpreted as “print the number 4.”

Preserve a copy of the document and note any existing sections, headers and footers. Do not delete all headers or page numbers merely because an old forum answer starts that way. They may carry required information in another section.

Use Pages format and inspect the boundary

Google's page-number controls are not available in Pageless format. Check File → Page setup → Pages before proceeding. If you cannot see the page boundaries, the page-format and print-layout guide explains the separate display setting.

Inspect the point immediately before the body. Google's non-printing-character view can reveal page breaks and section breaks. Open View → Show non-printing characters to distinguish them. The two marks serve different purposes even when both appear to move text to a new page.

Create the section only where it is needed

  1. Place the insertion point at the end of the front matter, immediately before the content that needs independent numbering.
  2. Use Insert → Break and choose the appropriate section-break type. For a new section beginning on the following page, use Section break (next page).
  3. Inspect the new boundary and the first body heading. Avoid adding another break on top of an existing suitable section boundary.

If a blank page or a large gap appears, check whether a pre-existing manual page break and the new section break are both advancing the text. Work on the copy and identify each mark before removing anything. A section break is structural; it is not a decorative blank line.

Google's current help offers both next-page and continuous section-break choices. The choice should match whether the new section belongs on a new page. A continuous section break is not a substitute for deliberately starting the body on the next page.

Choose the header or footer relationship

Open the header or footer in the body section. Google documents Link to previous as the control to uncheck when that section needs a different header or footer from the preceding section. If the option is absent, its help directs you to add a section break.

Check the relationship before deleting a visible number from earlier pages. Editing a linked header or footer without understanding the link can change more than the page you are viewing. Keep other required header text intact.

Different first page is another separate choice. It controls the first page of a document or section. If you want the first body page to show 1, do not accidentally hide that section's first-page number while trying to leave the document's cover unnumbered.

Apply the numbering to the correct scope

  1. With the intended body section active, open Insert → Page elements → Page number → More options.
  2. Read Apply to and choose the intended page or section scope instead of applying the change to the whole document by default.
  3. Choose the number position and starting value appropriate to your planned sequence. Google's feature announcement confirms that sections can have a chosen starting number.
  4. Confirm with Apply.

Older guides use “Insert → Page numbers” without the Page elements submenu. Use the current help for menu navigation. If your dialog does not offer the documented scope, check the section boundary and account for version or rollout differences rather than typing a plain “1” into every footer.

Test the sequence across the boundary

For the example with three front-matter pages, inspect physical pages 3, 4 and 5. The desired result is no unwanted number on page 3, then printed 1 and 2 on the first two body pages. Also inspect the last body page and the next section, if present.

If the first body page shows 4, you may have applied numbering without the intended starting value. If the cover gains a number, inspect the application scope and header/footer linkage. If the first body number is missing but the next page shows 2, inspect the Different first page choice.

These are editorial diagnostic comparisons, not diagnoses of your specific file. Change one relevant setting and compare the same pages again. Do not stack extra section breaks repeatedly until the visible number happens to look right.

Verify saved output and preserve an undo route

Allow the document's changes to save, reopen it, and check the same sequence. Then inspect print preview if the document will be printed or exported. Ensure the cover, contents and body numbering still meet the actual submission requirements.

If the change damages a required layout, use Undo while the operation is still available or return to your preserved copy. Record the boundary, scope and starting value that failed before attempting a new approach. Do not publish a private editing link simply to show the problem in a public forum.

Scope: Google's documented computer page/section controls, current menu path and section-numbering capability, with editorial sequence checks. No private Google document was edited, and no mobile UI or numbering configuration was reproduced.
