Restore Page Gaps in Google Docs: Check Pages and Print Layout
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
If Google Docs shows a continuous document with lines where you expected gaps between pages, check two separate settings: File → Page setup → Pages controls the document format; View → Show print layout controls the visible page outlines. A document can already be in Pages format while its print-layout display is hidden.
Do not delete text to repair a display setting
A missing gap is not evidence of an extra paragraph or a broken page boundary. Before pressing Backspace or inserting page breaks, inspect the document settings. In a public reader question, the author had already checked that the document was not pageless; the remaining question was the visible line between pages. That is why changing page format alone can miss the issue.
This guide covers the computer browser version of Google Docs. Mobile app instructions have different menus and should not be inferred from these steps. It does not repair a damaged file or guarantee that a printer will reproduce the editing view exactly.
Check the document's actual format
- Open the document on your computer.
- Choose File → Page setup.
- Read whether Pages or Pageless is selected.
- If the work requires pages, select Pages and confirm with OK.
Google also documents switching formats through the Format menu. Use one route and verify the resulting format rather than applying both repeatedly. Avoid Set as default unless you intentionally want the page settings applied to new documents; fixing this document does not require changing that default.
Pages supports features such as page numbers, headers and footers, orientation and margins. Pageless is designed for continuous scrolling, with text wrapping to the screen and wide tables that can be scrolled horizontally. These are different authoring choices, not two names for the same display zoom.
Then check the page-outline display
Google's page-settings help identifies View → Show print layout as the control for showing page outlines. Open View and inspect that setting. If the expected print-layout display is disabled, enable it and look at the boundary between two pages again.
Do not toggle a checked option just because a guide says to click it. Read its current state first, change it only if necessary, and check the visual result. If the gap returns, you have corrected the display for that document view; you have not proven anything about a separate printer problem.
Compare what changes and what should stay intact
As an editorial check, pick a heading near a page boundary and compare it before and after the change. Confirm that the text is still present and that the document's relevant page features are visible. You should not need to add empty paragraphs just to simulate a gap in the editor.
If the document intentionally uses Pageless, decide whether page-based features are actually needed. Google's pageless text-width options affect how you see pageless documents and do not change collaborators' text-width choices. Adjusting that width is not the procedure for restoring page boundaries in a Pages document.
Watch for features hidden by Pageless
Google states that switching an existing document to Pageless can hide elements such as headers, footers and watermarks. Switching back to Pages reveals those existing elements again. It is therefore unsafe to conclude that a header was deleted solely because it is not visible in a pageless editing view.
Before adding a replacement header or page number, check the format and then inspect the existing document. Otherwise you may be creating extra content when the original was merely hidden by the chosen mode.
Check the print preview separately
Google allows printing a pageless document, but its print help describes important differences: images adjust to page width, wide tables are fitted to the printed page, and some elements retained from a previous Pages document can still appear in print even when not visible in the pageless editor.
If output control is the goal, switch to Pages and inspect File → Print preview. Review the required headings, tables, images and page numbers before sending anything to a printer. A restored on-screen gap is a display check; the preview is the next check for the output task.
If the expected view still does not return
Record the device/browser, whether Page setup says Pages or Pageless, the checked state of Show print layout, and whether the problem affects one document or several. Keep a nonprivate description of the visible boundary. Do not publish confidential page screenshots or grant public access to the document merely to report a menu problem.
If you changed the format only for diagnosis and prefer the previous format, return through Page setup and restore that choice. Reinspect any headers, tables and print preview relevant to the document. For a shared document, coordinate intentional layout changes with its owner rather than treating them as purely personal display preferences.
