Remove Extra Space Before or After Paragraphs in Google Docs
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 7, 2026
For an unwanted gap before or after a paragraph in Google Docs on a computer, select the affected paragraphs and open Format → Line & paragraph spacing → Custom spacing. Inspect the Before and After values. If you want no added paragraph spacing, set those values to 0 and apply. This changes paragraph spacing; it does not delete paragraph text or remove page boundaries.
Identify the gap before changing the document
A reader using Chrome OS reported greater spacing before each paragraph and asked how to remove it. That is a different problem from missing gaps between pages. Start with the two neighboring paragraphs around one unwanted gap. Avoid selecting the entire document until you know which formatting needs changing: headings, lists and ordinary body text may intentionally use different spacing.
Compare the space between lines inside a paragraph with the space between paragraphs. If every line is too far apart, inspect line spacing. If the lines look right but the transition to another paragraph is too large, inspect the Before and After paragraph settings. An empty paragraph is a third possibility; removing formatting does not remove an actual empty paragraph.
1. Apply a narrow paragraph-spacing correction
- Open the document in the computer version of Google Docs.
- Select the affected paragraph or several neighboring paragraphs.
- Open Format → Line & paragraph spacing.
- Choose Custom spacing and read the existing Before and After values.
- For no added space, set Before and After to 0, then choose Apply.
- Inspect the same gap again, including the paragraph immediately above it.
The visible gap can involve spacing after one paragraph and spacing before the next. Checking both paragraphs is more useful than repeatedly changing only the lower one. Keep the line-spacing choice unless the space between lines also needs changing.
The menu also offers Single, 1.15, 1.5 and Double line-spacing choices. Picking Single is not a precise substitute for checking the Before and After settings. A document can use single-spaced lines and still have deliberate separation between paragraphs.
2. Read Add and Remove labels carefully
Some paragraph-spacing actions appear as Add or Remove space before or after a paragraph. Read the actual label before clicking. An Add action adds spacing; it is not a removal command simply because it occupies the same menu position shown in another person's instructions.
For a selection with inconsistent formatting, use explicit Custom spacing values on the intended paragraphs and inspect the result. This is easier to verify than repeatedly toggling an action while assuming every selected paragraph started with identical settings.
3. Decide whether to update the Normal text style
First fix a small example of ordinary body text and check its appearance. If this is the formatting you intentionally want for Normal text, use Format → Paragraph styles → Normal text → Update 'Normal text' to match. Choose representative body text, rather than a title or a special heading.
Changing a current paragraph and saving a default for future documents are different decisions. Google's help also documents Format → Paragraph styles → Options → Save as my default styles. Use that only when you want the chosen style to carry into new documents. A one-off correction does not require changing your defaults.
4. Check what the correction actually solved
Read the paragraphs before and after the changed area. Confirm that their words remain intact, that heading separation is still useful, and that any intentionally distinct list formatting remains suitable. For an important shared document, make deliberate broad style changes with the document owner's agreement.
If the gap remains, stop treating it as confirmed paragraph spacing. Describe whether it occurs between every paragraph, only at a page boundary, or beside a particular table or heading. Record the current spacing values and the selected paragraphs. Do not repeatedly press Backspace to force text upward: if no empty paragraph separates the text, that can alter the text instead of its formatting.
For missing visible boundaries between whole pages, use the separate Google Docs page-gap and print-layout checks. The present guide does not diagnose every large blank area, repair imported file layout, or promise identical mobile menus.
