Firefox print backgrounds missing: check Original format and color mode
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 8, 2026
In Firefox's print preview, expand More settings and check Print backgrounds when the missing content is a page background. If Format is set to Simplified, switch to Original to make the background option available. Check Color mode separately if you need color rather than black and white.
A page's background, its normal images and the printer's color output are different parts of the print path. This guide helps you identify which part is missing before changing a driver or printing a full document repeatedly. It follows Mozilla's current desktop printing documentation; no physical printer or local Firefox application was tested for this article.
Keep the same page and element for comparison
Choose one example: a shaded table header, a colored panel or a decorative background. Note where it appears on screen and which printed page should contain it. Comparing different pages or unrelated images makes it hard to tell whether a setting changed the output.
| What you observe | First thing to inspect | What you cannot conclude yet |
|---|---|---|
| Background shading is absent from preview | Format and Print backgrounds | That the printer has run out of color ink |
| The background option cannot be selected | Whether Format is Simplified | That Firefox needs a hidden configuration change |
| Preview contains the element but in gray | Color mode, when available for the destination | That background printing is disabled |
| Preview looks right but paper differs | The chosen destination and physical output settings | That the webpage's background setting failed |
These are investigation branches, not diagnoses. Some printers do not expose a customizable color-mode control in Firefox. Record the available options rather than treating a missing control as proof of a particular device fault.
Check the current Firefox controls
- Open the intended page in desktop Firefox and choose Print… from its application menu.
- Read the selected Destination. Confirm that you are examining the expected printer or Save to PDF preview.
- Expand More settings.
- If a Format choice is offered, inspect whether it says Original or Simplified. Mozilla states that Print backgrounds is unavailable in Simplified format.
- Choose the original format when you need the page backgrounds, then enable Print backgrounds.
- Inspect Color mode separately. Choose color if it is available and that is your intended output.
- Compare the same element in the preview before producing a physical test page.
Older support discussions refer to an Options tab or Page Setup. The original reader question reviewed here dates from 2019. It establishes the reader task, not the layout of today's print dialog. The current route above comes from Mozilla's updated printing help.
Use Save to PDF as a comparison, not a printer diagnosis
Firefox documents Save to PDF as a destination for saving the shown preview. If you want a paper-free comparison, select it and inspect the preview first. If you save a file, use a new filename and open the saved copy to check the same element.
For example, record “the shaded header is visible in the original webpage, absent in Simplified preview, present in Original preview with backgrounds enabled.” That sentence is a reporting example; it is not a result we measured on a reader's page. A saved PDF that looks correct can help distinguish a browser rendering result from a later physical-output difference, but it does not identify the printer's cause by itself.
If you do print to paper, choose a single relevant page and one copy. Compare the preview, saved output if used, and the physical sheet. Do not change several settings between the observations or you will not know which change mattered.
Why a page can still look different on paper
Mozilla notes that websites can intentionally present a different layout for print. Enabling backgrounds does not promise a pixel-for-pixel copy of the screen. A site may also offer its own printable report or document, which can be a more suitable version to review.
If an ordinary content image is missing rather than a background, do not assume the background toggle controls it. Identify the specific element and compare another known page with the same destination. The result should guide the next investigation instead of triggering a blanket browser reset.
Keep a useful result for support
- Record the Firefox version and the page URL, avoiding private links in a public report.
- Name the exact missing element and page, not just “printing is broken.”
- Record Original or Simplified format, the background setting, color mode and destination.
- State whether the element was missing in preview, the saved PDF, physical paper or more than one stage.
If the opened PDF itself is blank, use the separate PDF blank-output checklist. It compares document view, preview and paper for a different input. This article addresses Firefox's webpage printing choices and does not establish an ink, driver or PDF-corruption diagnosis.
