Firefox Toolbar Hides Until You Point at the Top? Exit Full Screen
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
If Firefox’s tabs and toolbar appear when you move the pointer to the top edge, then disappear over the page, check Full Screen mode. Mozilla documents this behavior. Leave that mode if you want the browser navigation to stay visible.
Match the symptom first
Our suggested check is to move the pointer to the top, then back over an ordinary webpage. Note whether the entire navigation area appears and hides. If it never appears, or just one button is absent, this check has not identified the cause. A video occupying the screen or a mobile browser is outside this guide.
Use the visible menu to leave full screen
- Move the pointer to the top edge to reveal the toolbar.
- Open Firefox’s menu button at the upper right.
- Select the exit full screen control. Its icon can vary with the version; consult Mozilla’s linked illustration if you cannot identify it.
Choose the shortcut for your platform
Mozilla lists F11 for Windows and Linux; on compact keyboards, fn + F11 may be needed. For macOS, it lists Command + Shift + F. These toggle the mode. If a key does not change the window, use the menu route rather than repeatedly pressing unfamiliar combinations.
Check the result and keep a way back
Our acceptance check: move the pointer into the page again and confirm the navigation stays visible. A keypress alone is not evidence of recovery. Record the platform, Firefox version, route used and visible result if you need further help.
To return to full screen intentionally, use the same platform shortcut or choose the full screen control in Firefox’s menu. Check which mode you ended in.
If only File, Edit or View is missing
That Menu bar is a separate control. On Windows/Linux, Mozilla describes temporary access with Alt and a Menu Bar option in the toolbar context menu. On Mac, first select the Firefox window so the system Menu bar belongs to Firefox. Follow the linked Menu bar article with its operating-system selector for your version.
If leaving full screen does not match the problem, stop this path. This symptom alone does not justify resetting Firefox or changing extensions. For page content size rather than hidden navigation, see our separate Chrome zoom guide, which applies to Chrome.
