Firefox asks where to save but not whether to open: check the file-type action
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 8, 2026
Firefox's “ask where to save” setting chooses a destination; it does not choose whether a file type opens in an application or is saved. To restore the open-or-save question for a known file type, find that type in Settings and set its action to Always ask. Keep the folder preference separate. A downloaded file opened in another application can still remain in the Downloads folder.
This is a source-checked guide to desktop Firefox download choices, not a claim that we reproduced your browser profile. Mozilla's current documentation describes both the newer Downloads settings page and the older General → Applications location. Follow the labels present in your version. The historical reader question behind this guide had already enabled the destination prompt but still wanted the open-or-save question.
Choose which question you want Firefox to ask
| Your intended question | Setting to inspect | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Where should this saved file go? | The download destination preference | Whether Firefox should open this file type |
| Should I open or save this kind of file? | The file type's action, set to Always ask | That opening leaves no downloaded copy |
| What should happen to a type with no saved action? | The preference for other files, when shown | That existing per-type actions are replaced |
| Why does a document open in another application immediately? | The action stored for that content type | That the operating system's global file association must be changed |
Start by naming one affected type, such as PDF or a presentation, and one intended result. Changing all download preferences at once makes it harder to tell which choice mattered. Use an ordinary non-confidential test file whose source and purpose you trust; a sensitive attachment is unnecessary for checking the setting.
Change a known type's action
- Open Firefox Settings from the application menu.
- Find Files and applications on the Downloads page. In versions using the older arrangement, look under General → Applications.
- Locate the content type you want to change. Read the full type description and current action.
- Change that row's action to Always ask if you want an open-or-save decision for that type.
- Leave the destination setting alone until you have tested the action change. Then adjust the folder preference only if the destination is also wrong.
Take note of the original row and action so you can restore them. Repeat one download of the same type, then confirm which question appeared. Do not assume a setting for PDF governs ZIP archives, presentation files or another type.
If the type is not listed
Mozilla documents a separate preference for files without an established action: under What should Firefox do with other files?, choose Ask whether to open or save files when that option is available. This is the branch for unlisted types; changing an existing type's row remains a separate step.
If the downloaded item offers Always Open Similar Files in its context menu, selecting it creates an automatic-open preference for that type. If you previously selected that option and now want a prompt again, inspect the type's stored action. Do not keep selecting “always open” while expecting Firefox to ask next time.
A file's name extension alone is not a complete description of what the website sent. Mozilla notes that a wrong content type supplied by a site can affect the available actions. If one site behaves differently from another for the same apparent extension, record both examples and the available type rows. A global reset is not the first diagnostic step.
Why an opened file can still be saved
Opening a download in another application is not equivalent to viewing a remote file without a local copy. Mozilla's download documentation explains that files opened with applications are saved in the configured download folder. Firefox also avoids the folder-selection interruption in that open-with flow even when the destination preference asks where to save files.
For a type Firefox can display itself, an Open in Firefox action may be offered. It is not an option for every possible type. Do not promise that choosing it eliminates every download: a site's response and whether the browser treats it as a download remain relevant.
Check the outcome and keep the limits visible
- Reopen Settings and verify the affected type still shows the action you selected.
- Repeat the same harmless file request and distinguish an action prompt from a destination picker.
- Inspect the Downloads list and configured folder if you need to know whether a copy was saved.
- If the setting did not affect the result, record the Firefox version, source URL, displayed type and exact behavior for support. Do not report that all downloads ignore settings based on one site.
Some old forum answers recommend changing a preference in about:config to restore an earlier download panel. The reader thread we reviewed is from 2022. This guide uses the current documented Settings controls instead of presenting that historical workaround as a current fix. It also does not change your operating system's default application or send, open or download any personal attachment for you.
If your issue is choosing the folder in Chrome rather than the open-or-save decision in Firefox, use the separate Chrome download destination checklist. If Windows opens a ZIP archive with Acrobat, inspect the file association and actual extension; that is a different problem from Firefox's saved download action.
