Choose Where Chrome Saves Downloads on a Computer
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
On a computer, open Chrome’s More → Settings → Downloads. Use Change to choose the default download location, or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading to choose a destination for each download. Then verify the folder used by one ordinary download.
Choose the workflow you need
A default folder is useful when you want incoming files collected in one place. A prompt is useful when you deliberately file each document into a different project folder. Those are storage choices; neither setting establishes that a download completed or that a file is safe.
Google documents both controls under Downloads. Confirm the folder displayed there before changing it, and select a location you are allowed to use. This article describes desktop settings. It does not prescribe the same folder picker for a phone or tablet.
Check the actual saved location
- Open More → Settings → Downloads and record the current location and prompt choice.
- Select Change if you need a different default folder, or enable the per-file prompt when that is your intended workflow.
- Use an ordinary, non-sensitive file link for a small comparison.
- After the download finishes, find the file in Chrome’s Downloads list. Google documents Show in Folder as an action available when pointing to a filename in the download tray.
- Compare the actual folder and filename with the location you intended before using or attaching the document.
For an editorial example, a work folder and a personal Downloads folder might each contain a file called “agenda.pdf.” Check the path as well as the name before attaching either one. This is a suggested verification check, not a download test we performed.
If Chrome behaves differently
Record the setting, Chrome version, operating system, and the action that opened the dialog. Distinguish following a download link from explicitly choosing a site’s export or Save command. A discrepancy is useful information for support; it does not prove that a reset, registry change or extension removal is needed.
This guide does not promise to repair an ignored setting or establish how every managed profile or website behaves. If a transfer fails instead of saving, follow the download error checklist. If PDFs open in a tab when you wanted a saved file, review the separate PDF handling preference.
Scope: Google’s documented computer download-location controls with an editorial file-location check. No profile preference or download destination was changed in preparing this guide.
