Cancel a Stuck Print Job in Windows 11: Start With the Queue

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026

Open the affected printer’s queue and cancel the stuck request before sending another copy. An empty queue confirms that the request is no longer listed there; it does not, by itself, prove that the printer can print successfully.

Open the right queue

Microsoft’s Windows 11 route is Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners. Select the printer, then Open print queue. Right-click a queued job and choose Cancel. Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence cancels the queued jobs before moving on.

Check the printer name and job details first. On a shared device, coordinate with its owner before cancelling other people’s work. If Windows reports the device as offline, use the offline-printer checks as a separate branch; this guide focuses on a request that remains in the queue.

Observe before resending

Record the job name, status and time, then watch whether the entry disappears. Avoid clicking Print repeatedly while you are unsure which requests remain. A useful note is “one job remains marked deleting after cancellation,” rather than simply “still broken.” This is a suggested observation, not a failure we reproduced.

If cancellation does not clear it

Microsoft next documents restarting the Print Spooler: press Windows + R, enter services.msc, find Print Spooler, right-click it and select Restart. On a managed or shared setup, let the administrator handle this step.

The Microsoft source also covers further recovery when a queue still will not clear. This short guide stops before manually deleting spool files. Share your recorded queue state with support instead of making several untracked system changes.

Define a successful retry

Use one short, non-sensitive document and one copy. Check both the queue and the physical output. Cancellation and successful printing are separate results; record each so you know which part remains unresolved.

Scope: Windows 11 queue cancellation and the documented service restart. No Windows printer failure was reproduced for this guide.
