LibreOffice Writer gray outlines: hide text boundaries before changing borders

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 8, 2026

If Writer suddenly shows thin outlines around the text area after a view-setting change, check View → Boundaries. Some versions or interfaces call the setting Text Boundaries. LibreOffice's current help says these guides are visible on screen and are not printed. Hiding them is different from removing an actual paragraph, table or page border.

A reader reported this on November 7, 2026 after changing Writer options. They later confirmed that turning off Text Boundaries in View removed the unwanted outlines. We compared that reported result with current LibreOffice 26.8 help. We did not reproduce their document or change a native Writer setting.

Try the narrow view control first

  1. Open the document and note where the outlines appear.
  2. Open View and find Boundaries or Text Boundaries for your interface.
  3. Toggle that setting once and inspect the same area.
  4. Reopen the menu to confirm its checked state matches the view you chose.
  5. Check the document's print preview before changing any actual border formatting.

The current help also places Boundaries under the View menu in the tabbed interface's View tab. Use the control that matches your interface rather than changing page margins to make an outline move.

What the toggle can affect

The documented control covers the page's printable-area boundaries and guides for table cells without assigned borders. If guides around a borderless table also disappear, that can be part of this view setting's scope. It is not evidence that the table itself was deleted.

Choose the view according to the editing task. Hiding guides can reduce visual clutter; showing them can help locate otherwise invisible text or table areas. Neither outcome establishes that the document's layout or printed content changed.

If the line remains, do not assume it is a guide

A real formatting border is a separate object or property. If the line remains after the relevant view toggle, record its location and whether it appears in print preview. Inspect the corresponding formatting only after identifying it. Do not remove every border or reset the entire profile just because one gray outline is annoying.

Likewise, the reader's complaint about a cursor on blank paragraphs does not establish that every cursor-visibility problem is caused by boundaries. The narrow evidence here is an accidental view setting, a matching outline and the reader's confirmed toggle result.

Completion check

Compare the same page region before and after the toggle. Confirm the selected menu state, inspect print preview and keep the actual border formatting intact unless you separately intend to change it. If the symptom differs from that boundary pattern, retain the distinction and investigate the real object rather than treating the toggle as a universal line-removal command.

Checked November 8, 2026 against current LibreOffice 26.8 help and the dated reader's self-reported resolution. No native Writer document, printing device or profile settings were tested.
