Repeat or Stop Frozen Rows on Printed Google Sheets Pages
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
For Google Sheets on a computer, freeze the heading rows you need, then open File → Print → Headers & footers and enable Repeat frozen rows. If rows should stay frozen for on-screen scrolling but should not repeat on printed pages, leave the sheet's freeze arrangement alone and turn off that print option. Check the second page in preview before printing.
Separate screen behavior from printed output
Freezing keeps a row or column visible while you navigate the sheet. Repeating frozen rows or columns is a print setting. The reader problem can therefore go in either direction: column headings disappear on page two, or too many frozen rows repeat when only the editing view needed them.
This guide concerns repeated sheet rows, not a Google Docs page header and not a PDF viewer's multiple-pages-per-sheet control. Google Sheets also has print headers and footers for information such as the document's chosen fields; those are not a substitute for repeating the actual column-label rows in the grid.
Choose the intended print scope first
Google's print instructions distinguish Current sheet, Workbook and Selected cells. If you intend to print only part of the data, select the required cells or sheet before opening File → Print, then read the scope in the print settings.
Our suggested starting record is simple: which sheet or range, which rows identify the columns, and whether each printed page needs those rows. Do not change a shared sheet's frozen-row arrangement merely to make a print preview look different without considering its editing use.
Repeat the heading rows you need
- In the sheet, identify the top row or rows that contain the headings.
- If necessary, freeze the required row or rows using the sheet's View → Freeze controls.
- Open File → Print.
- Confirm the intended sheet, workbook or cell-range scope.
- Open Headers & footers and choose Repeat frozen rows.
- Inspect page two and a later page in the preview.
Google documents a parallel Repeat frozen columns choice. Use it when the output spans pages horizontally and the identifying columns need to repeat. Treat rows and columns as separate choices rather than enabling both automatically.
Stop unwanted repetition without changing the editing view
If the first six rows are frozen for viewing but should not appear at the top of every printed page, turn off Repeat frozen rows in the print settings. Then inspect the next page again. You do not need to unfreeze the sheet merely to test that output choice.
If you want only a subset of the frozen rows repeated, recognize the documented control's scope: it repeats frozen rows. This guide does not claim that the setting offers an independent arbitrary “repeat rows 8–9” range. Decide whether changing the sheet structure or creating an authorized print-specific copy is appropriate before making broader changes.
Check readability after repetition is enabled
Repeated headers use space on each page. Inspect the body rows as well as the heading. Verify that the text is legible, that a relevant identifying column remains present and that the last required rows are included.
Google documents print margins, orientation and paper size. Use those settings intentionally if the page layout needs adjustment. A landscape layout may suit a wide sheet, but changing orientation is not proof that all columns or rows fit correctly. Inspect the preview after each meaningful change.
For custom page boundaries, Google provides Set custom page breaks. Drag a boundary to the intended position and confirm the breaks. Each preview rectangle represents a separate page. Avoid stacking layout adjustments without checking what each did to the output.
Follow the browser-specific next step
After the Sheets print settings, select Next. Google's computer help says Chrome proceeds to a print window. For Firefox or Safari, it describes a PDF download that you open in a PDF viewer before choosing File → Print.
If a PDF is downloaded, reopen that file and check the repeated headings there. If it differs from the Sheets preview, record that stage difference. The fact that a download completed does not establish that the correct sheet or range was included.
Finish with a reproducible result
Check the first page, second page, a representative later page and the final required row. Record the sheet/range, freeze arrangement and repeat-row/column choices. Those details make the next print run repeatable without assuming every sheet in the workbook has the same needs.
If you changed the freeze arrangement only for this output, restore the intended editing arrangement afterward and verify it. Recheck the print options before a later print task; a setting that was correct for one report may be unwanted for another.
Scope: Google's documented computer Sheets printing and freeze workflow with editorial preview checks. No spreadsheet, printer or browser-specific PDF output was tested, and no custom arbitrary repeat-row feature is claimed.
