Gmail Undo Send: Set the Cancellation Window and Know Its Limit

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026

Gmail documents a short cancellation period immediately after sending. On a computer, choose Settings → See all settings, find Undo Send, select 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds, and save changes. For a just-sent message, the bottom-left Message sent notice offers Undo. Changing this setting later does not create a documented recall procedure for an email sent minutes or hours earlier.

First separate immediate cancellation from later recall

A Gmail reader asks how to unsend a message after about 20 minutes. That is outside the cancellation choices in Google's current computer instructions. The useful distinction is the available action at the time of sending, rather than a promise that the message can be removed from a recipient's mailbox.

Google's official guidance says you have a short time to cancel and lists a maximum setting of 30 seconds. It does not document a minutes-later recall button for this task. Community explanations describe the setting as a sending delay, but community replies are not guarantees about every mail system.

1. If the Undo notice is still available

  1. Read the bottom-left notice immediately after sending in Gmail on a computer.
  2. If Undo is offered and you want to cancel that send, click Undo promptly.
  3. Inspect the resulting message state before making any further action.
  4. Recheck recipients, subject, body and attachments before deciding whether to send again.

Do not spend the short cancellation interval searching for a different recall feature. The documented immediate control is Undo in the send notice. A message in Sent is not, by itself, proof that the Undo option remains available.

This guide does not promise a particular recovery control after navigating away or dismissing the notice. If the documented control is no longer available, do not treat a still-open browser tab or an estimated timer as proof that cancellation succeeded.

2. Choose the future cancellation period on a computer

  1. Open the intended Gmail account in the browser.
  2. Choose Settings, then See all settings.
  3. Locate Undo Send and read the current Send cancellation period.
  4. Select the intended option: 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds.
  5. At the bottom, choose Save changes.
  6. Reopen the settings and read the saved cancellation period.

Checking the account matters when several Gmail accounts are open. A setting saved for one account is not evidence that the other account has the same value. Record the actual saved choice instead of assuming the longest period was already selected.

Reopening settings confirms persistence of the setting. It does not verify that an earlier message was cancelled, that a recipient never saw it, or that all devices present exactly the same interface. Google's linked instructions have separate computer and mobile platform views.

3. If the message was sent minutes ago

Do not change the cancellation period and then report the older message as recalled. Inspect the intended account and actual sent message so that you know which recipients and attachments were involved. Deleting your own copy is not a documented recipient-recall method in the Undo Send instructions.

Any later response depends on what was sent and the sender's authority. You may need to correct information or follow an organization's own process, but those actions are separate from cancelling delivery. A request asking a recipient to disregard a message is not proof that their copy disappeared.

If access to an independently shared file is involved, that file's sharing controls are also a separate subject. Changing link access must not be described as erasing a delivered attachment or every copy of its contents. Do not install an unverified extension that promises a general recall capability for already delivered email.

4. Reduce mistakes before the next send

Use the saved delay as one opportunity for a final check, not a guarantee. Before Send, read the full To, Cc and Bcc fields, the subject, message and attachment list. Check for similarly named recipients and an unintended reply-all audience.

Keep unrelated drafts or corrections separate until their contents are ready. There is no need to send a live message merely to verify that the cancellation-period setting was saved. If you perform your own authorized test, its result must be inspected as a test message rather than counted as a recall of the original email.

Completion for the settings task is the intended account showing the intended saved period. Completion for an immediate cancellation needs evidence from that actual send action. No private mailbox was accessed and no message was sent or cancelled while preparing this source-based guide.
