Firefox Find Bar Opens When You Type? Check Automatic Page Search
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
If Firefox starts finding page text when you type outside an input field, inspect Search for text when you start typing. Mozilla documents this setting as automatically opening Quick Find. Closing the current bar with Esc is a different action from changing that preference.
Close the current search
Mozilla documents the Find bar at the bottom of the window. Select its close button or press Esc to close it. Quick Find can also disappear after a short time. If it returns when you type ordinary letters outside a text field, check the automatic-search preference.
Inspect automatic page search
Open Firefox’s menu and choose Settings. Mozilla lists the setting under General → Browsing or, in the reorganized layout, Tabs and browsing → Page navigation. Find Search for text when you start typing. Turn it off if you do not want typing alone to start a page search. Changes save automatically.
Check the same trigger
Our suggested acceptance check is to return to an ordinary public page, focus a non-input area, and type a short word without first pressing a search shortcut. Record whether automatic Quick Find still appears. Use the same kind of page area as before changing the preference.
Separately, confirm that intentional search remains available from Menu → Find in page, or Ctrl + F on Windows/Linux and Command + F on Mac. Mozilla also documents / for Quick Find and the single-quote key for link-only Quick Find when outside a text field. Those explicit shortcuts are different triggers.
Keep unrelated symptoms separate
For example, if typing in a page’s form field still goes somewhere unexpected, record the focused field and the exact key. This automatic page-search setting does not establish the cause of an address-bar focus problem, a changed browser theme or a website’s broken form.
Scope: Firefox’s documented Find and automatic Quick Find controls. No extension removal, profile reset or theme repair is part of this procedure.
