Make Firefox the default browser: verify the setting and an external link

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 8, 2026

Open Firefox Settings, find the Default browser section and use Make default if Firefox is not already selected. Then reopen the setting and test a normal web link from another application. A link opened from inside Firefox does not by itself test which browser the operating system chooses for other apps.

A reader asked on November 7, 2026 how to make Firefox the default browser. We checked Mozilla's current desktop instructions and their platform/version variants. This is official-source guidance: we did not change native Firefox settings or the operating system's default associations.

Find the control for your settings layout

  1. Open Firefox Settings. On Windows and Linux, the documented route starts from the menu button. On Mac, use Firefox → Settings in the top menu; some installations label it Preferences.
  2. Locate the Default browser section. Mozilla's current newer-layout guidance places it on Account and sync or Home and startup.
  3. On an older layout, check the General panel's startup/default-browser area instead.
  4. Read the current status before selecting Make default.

The location can vary with the Firefox version. A guide that only shows the older General panel is not proof that the newer interface lacks the feature. Use the current official help's customization choices when the labels differ.

Read the current state before repeating the action

If Firefox is already the default, Mozilla says the action button is absent and a confirmation message is shown instead. In that case, a missing button is an expected state, not evidence that the setting failed to load.

After making a change, close and reopen the Settings page and read the status again. If your operating system presents another default-app confirmation, finish the intended choice there and return to Firefox to verify it. We did not execute those system dialogs, so this guide does not certify their appearance on every platform or managed installation.

Test the result at the right boundary

Use an ordinary web link in another application that is set up to open links in an external browser, such as a trusted link in a mail client. Inspect which browser actually receives it. A bookmark or new tab created inside Firefox only tests Firefox's own navigation.

If Firefox reports the intended state but one particular application opens links differently, record that application's behavior separately. An embedded in-app browser is a different test from launching the system browser. Do not repeatedly change unrelated Firefox preferences without identifying which application and link action differ.

If the setting does not persist

Record the operating system, Firefox version, the exact setting status and the result of the external-link test. Follow Mozilla's linked default-browser troubleshooting article for the matching platform rather than assuming a profile reset or reinstall is necessary. The simple how-to question does not establish the cause of a system-policy or app-specific override.

Checked November 8, 2026 against current Mozilla help and the dated reader question. Native Firefox, operating-system confirmation dialogs, managed-device policy and app-specific link handling were not tested.
