Copy a Link to Highlighted Text in Chrome and Check Where It Opens
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
On a webpage in desktop Chrome, select the passage you want to share, right-click the selection, and choose Copy link to highlight. Google documents this as a way to create a link directly to highlighted text. Reopen the copied link and check the destination before sending it.
Select a useful passage
Click and drag across the text you want to point out. Right-click that selection, then choose Copy link to highlight. Paste the copied link where you need it.
Our suggested starting example is a short passage in a public article you can easily recognize. Choose enough context to identify the point, rather than selecting a very large section and assuming every part will be highlighted exactly as you expect.
Test the link itself
As an editorial acceptance check, open the copied link in another tab. Compare three things: the destination webpage, the passage that is brought into view, and the words actually highlighted. A correct page address is useful, but it is not the same result as a correct passage highlight.
For example, if you are sharing a manufacturer’s explanation with a colleague, make sure the highlighted passage describes the relevant model. If the page opens but the expected words are not highlighted, keep that limitation visible in your message. You can identify the section heading and the phrase to look for instead of presenting the link as a successful direct jump.
If the option is unavailable
Google notes that the feature may not work for selected content when the option cannot be selected. The documented creation procedure does not establish a universal repair for an unavailable menu item.
Record the page address and what kind of selection you made. Try a short ordinary text passage if that helps you compare the behavior, but do not treat one successful example as proof that every page or document type supports the feature.
Keep the reference understandable
Our suggested sharing format is a short explanation of why the passage matters, its section heading, and the checked link. That gives the recipient context even when the highlight does not appear as expected. Recheck an important reference if the source page changes.
Scope: desktop Chrome’s documented highlight-link creation route. No guaranteed highlight in every recipient’s browser, permanent text anchor, PDF support, or fix for a missing menu option is claimed. We have not tested your source page.
