Close, Ungroup or Delete a Chrome Tab Group? Check the Result First
By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026
In desktop Chrome, Close group, Ungroup and Delete group have different results. Google documents a closed group as saved and reopenable; ungrouping leaves its tabs open but deletes the group. Deleting removes the group, including on other devices using the same Google Account.
Match the action to the task
| Your task | Documented action | Result to check |
|---|---|---|
| Use less space in the tab strip | Select the group’s name or colored circle | The group collapses or expands |
| Put the group away for later | Right-click the group → Close group | The saved group can be reopened |
| Keep the pages open without their group | Right-click the group → Ungroup | Tabs stay open; the group is deleted |
| Remove the group | Right-click the group → Delete group, then confirm | The group is removed |
Google specifically notes that ungrouping and deleting can remove the group on other devices using the same account. Read the action’s label and confirmation before choosing it.
Reopen a group you closed
Google documents opening a closed group from the bookmarks bar’s group grid or from More → Tab groups → [group name]. Look for the expected group name before opening it.
Our suggested acceptance check is to compare the reopened pages with the group you meant to put away. For example, a research group might contain a source article, a manufacturer’s page and a reference table. Check those expected pages instead of treating a matching group name as a complete verification.
Practice the distinction with disposable pages
If you are learning the controls, our suggested approach is to make a small practice group using public pages you can easily reopen. Try collapsing and closing that group, then find it again. Keep important ongoing work outside the practice exercise and record the action you actually used.
This example is a checking method, not a claim that we tested synchronization or saved groups in your profile. Do not use a successful practice result to assume a previously missing collection has been recovered.
If a saved group is missing
If the group is absent from the documented locations, this guide has not established a recovery method. Record whether you used Close, Ungroup or Delete and which device and account context you were using. The operation definitions do not prove a damaged profile, and they do not justify deleting browser data to look for a lost group.
Scope: current desktop Chrome group operations. No restoration of deleted groups, repair of profile-specific saving defects, or guarantee about your devices’ synchronization is claimed.
