Chrome Will Not Open on Mac? Check Compatibility and the Installed Copy

By ON Lab · Sources checked November 6, 2026

For Chrome on a Mac, check the Mac's installed macOS version against Google's current requirement, then use Google's Mac installation file and copy Chrome into Applications. A compatibility message on an App Store listing does not establish why a separately downloaded Mac app will not launch. Record which screen produced the message before changing the installation.

Separate the two symptoms first

A recent Chrome Community reader had downloaded an installer, found that Chrome would not open, and then saw an incompatible-device message in the App Store. Those are two observations, rather than proof of one cause. This guide separates operating-system compatibility, the Mac installation route, and a remaining launch error. It does not diagnose every damaged-app or security warning.

Before proceeding, note three things: the exact macOS version, where the installation file came from, and the exact text shown when opening Chrome from Applications. Do not publish a screenshot containing account details or other private windows when asking for help.

1. Read the installed macOS version

  1. Open the Apple menu at the upper-left corner of the screen.
  2. Choose About This Mac.
  3. Record the macOS name and version number. The Mac's model year alone is not the installed operating-system version.
  4. Compare that number with Google's current Mac requirement in its installation documentation.

At this source check, Google requires macOS 13 Ventura or later for current Chrome on Mac. For example, macOS 12 does not meet that requirement; macOS 13 meets this particular version threshold. Meeting the threshold does not prove that every possible installation or launch problem is solved.

If the Mac is below the requirement, stop repeating the same current installer. Apple's compatibility information determines whether that Mac can upgrade to a supported macOS. Back up and plan any operating-system upgrade separately. This guide does not recommend a third-party legacy Chrome download or an unsupported operating-system patch as a compatibility fix.

2. Use the Mac installation route

On the Mac, open Google's Chrome download page in a working browser. Follow the Mac download route. Google's documented Mac installer is googlechrome.dmg; its instructions do not use an App Store listing to install the Mac desktop browser.

  1. Open the downloaded googlechrome.dmg.
  2. In the window that opens, locate Chrome.
  3. Drag Chrome into the Applications folder.
  4. If an administrator password is requested, use the device owner's approved installation process. Do not share that password with a helper.
  5. After copying completes, use Finder to locate Chrome in Applications and open that copy.
  6. When finished with the installer, eject the Chrome disk image from Finder's sidebar.

Google also documents using a location where you have full permissions if you cannot enter an administrator password. On a managed work or school Mac, consult the administrator before choosing a different installation location. A permissions problem and an unsupported macOS version require different follow-up.

3. Check the installed copy, not just the download

The installation check is more than seeing a DMG in Downloads. Confirm that the copied Chrome app opens from its intended installation location. Close an ordinary test window, eject the installer image, and open the installed copy again. That distinguishes an installed app from an installer window that was merely opened.

If Chrome opens, visit an ordinary non-sensitive page. You can then check More → Help → About Google Chrome to inspect its version and update state. Avoid moving bookmarks, passwords, or a work profile until the basic installation is working. Installing the browser and migrating a profile are separate tasks.

If it still does not open

When requesting further help, include the macOS version, official download route, whether copying to Applications completed, and the exact launch message. These details are more useful than “Chrome is incompatible” without identifying which screen said so.

Keep the scope of the result clear

Success here means the supported Mac installation opens from its installed location. It does not prove that account sign-in, profile migration, extensions or every website will work. This is a source-based decision guide; an installation on the reader's device was not reproduced. No reader account, device password or existing profile is required to read or use the checks.
